Iron-Rich Chickpea & Sweet Potato Mash

A hearty and naturally sweet mash packed with plant-based protein and iron. This recipe uses a fork-mashed texture to help your baby transition toward solid finger foods while staying easy to swallow.
Ingredients
- 0.5 cup Chickpeas
- 1 medium Sweet Potato
- 1 small Carrot
- 1 teaspoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Instructions
- Peel the sweet potato and carrot. Cut them into small, even chunks.
- Steam the vegetables for 12-15 minutes until they are very tender when pierced with a fork.
- If using canned chickpeas, rinse them thoroughly under cold running water to remove excess sodium. If using dried, ensure they are soaked and cooked until very soft.
- Add the warm steamed vegetables and the chickpeas into a bowl.
- Use a fork to mash the mixture together. Aim for a 'chunky-smooth' consistency where some small soft lumps remain, but all chickpeas are completely crushed.
- Stir in the olive oil and a tiny pinch of cumin to help expand your baby's palate.
- If the mash is too thick, add 1-2 tablespoons of the steaming water, breast milk, or formula to loosen it.
- Serve warm.
